Science model expo begins at Pilikula

Mangalore, Jul 20: Stressing on the importance of science and technology, Minister for Environment and Forest B Ramanath Rai has said that exhibition of science models help improving the creative level of the students and also develop scientific bent of mind among them.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the six-day long science exhibition at Regional Science Centre in Pilikula, on outskirts of city, he said that such programmes complement the changes in the society.

“We might have shortage of facilities but we do not have shortage talent and intellect. This abundance in talent and intellect will lead us to a future which will be strengthened by scientific know-how,” he said adding that the country will emerge as a super power in future because of its intellectual resource and talent pool.

DIET Principal Philomena Lobo said that the encouragement students get for science should be extended to other subjects like literature, history etc.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Tulasi Maddineni said that DK district has a distinct place in field of education. Students even in distant parts of the state aspire to come to Dakshina Kannada to pursue their education.

Delivering keynote address Dayavati from DIET said that the students who bag district-level award in the exhibition will be sent to compete at the state-level. Over the next six days as many as 1500 students will present their science models.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
