Facebook post against Prophet Muhammad triggers massive protest; One arrested

Kumbla, Jul 21: A youth was arrested on Sunday in connection with obnoxious comment against Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that sparked outrage in Kasargod, Kumbla and surrounding area.

The arrested is 27 year old Arun Kumar.

Section 144 was imposed to improve security for the next one week and to avoid any untoward incident in the vicinity. They have increased vigilance on main roads. Police presence to search for vehicles has also increased to check violation.

Protest erupted in Kumbla town on Saturday against insulting depictions of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on the Facebook.

Led by Kumbla Muslim United Forum, hundreds of Muslims marched on the main streets of town and converged in front of police station.

They were demanding the immediate arrest of a few local youths, who had posted derogatory remarks against the Prophet (pbuh) through creating an account called 'Hindu Shakthi Kumble'.

“Some anti-Islamic pages have been uploaded on the Facebook by vested interests who want to hurt the sentiments of Muslim community. These miscreants are working in tandem with some organisations that have hatched a conspiracy to trigger communal violence,” the protesters alleged.

They said that even though the miscreants had been continuously posting insulting and provocative comments since Friday morning, police had refused to register a case when a few local Muslim leaders tried to lodge a complaint.

The police were however forced to file a case when Muslim leaders warned to stage massive protest against police, the protesters said.

It is learnt that police had not given permission to hold protest on Saturday. When the protesters allegedly tried to lay siege to the station, the police resorted to mild baton charge and managed to keep the crowed away.

Meanwhile, the police have reportedly taken two persons into custody in Kannur in connection with the case.

While contacted Kasargod Superintended of Police Thomson Jose said that the police investigating the case with the help of cyber crime cell.

He said that this is the not time miscreants using social networking site to disturb the peace. “Such attempts have been going on in this region. We will take strict action against such miscreants,” he said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
