Kasargod, Jul 22: What best can someone find on the shores of the sea. Dead fish and shells. But, here in Kasargod, the shores have been hosting some unusual things like refrigerator, football, bulbs etc. The reason for the same has not been ascertained and all of this is sounding mysterious because there has been no news of any cargo ship sinking deep sea so far, anywhere in the region. The Coast Guards are working hard to solve this puzzle.
A month ago a cargo vessel had sunk about 840 nautical miles from Mumbai. It is said that 4,500 containers had been lost from the ship which was sailing to Jeddah from Singapore. The ship is also said to have in it weapons supplied by America to Syrian rebels. Though information has been disseminated to all the Coast Guard units, the source of these commodities has not been traced.
Festival for locals
The families living nearby have been making hay when sun shines. Surprised by the freebies sailing their way, the local residents are busy taking the commodities home, as and when they get deposited on the shore. Some are also seen selling those commodities in the market.
Adidas football for Rs 200
A football of international brand 'Adidas' costs nothing less than Rs 2,500. However, the branded footballs that have sailed on their own to Kasargod are being sold by locals at Rs 250 per ball. Usually, footballs are packed in flattened forms and on delivery the footballs are filled with air. However, the balls that are floating to Kasargod are already blown.
Cylinders
Meanwhile several cylinders have been found and the authorities are trying to figure out if there are any unusual contents inside the cylinder. Though cylinders have been tested there are no facilities to open them up. Hence special bomb squads have been summoned from Kozhikode. The cylinders have been stocked in Coastal police station. When the prints on the cylinder were searched on internet, it was found that the name is that of a liquor company abroad.
2003 incident
On June 5, 2003, similar incident had happened. Barrels of liquor had floated near Kanjhangad and people thronged to get one for themselves. The barrels actually contained a poisonous substance called methyl alcohol and consuming this two died and one person was rendered blind.
However, Coast Guards Calicut office PRO Kalam says that it is for the first time that such commodities are seen floating to the shores.
Warning
The Coast Guards have already warned the people to be cautious and not pick the things floating to the shores. People who spot such commodities floating to the shores may contact 04994-224800.
