Mangalore, July 24: The district unit of Campus Front of India (CFI) held a demonstration and road-block near University College at Hampankatta here on Wednesday, protesting against malicious assaults on innocent students by miscreants.

The demonstrators claimed that certain communal forces belonging to saffron outfits were trying to disrupt the communal harmony in the region by indulging in acts of moral policing, and condemned the assault made on two students in Yekkur on the outskirts of the city on Monday.

They said that these forces were trying to perpetrate 'mental terrorism' on the minorities in the state, especially on the Muslim community, and said that attempts to spoil the communal harmony would not work.

CFI district president Sanaullah said that several instances of moral policing had taken place in the district in the past few days, as part of a conspiracy hatched by certain forces. He urged the intelligence teams to inform the police department and the government about these forces, who ought to take stringent action to prevent them.

He also demanded that moral policing should not continue henceforth in the district, warning that the organisation would take steps to prevent these incidents in the coming days if the government failed to do so.

CFI state committee member Asif Baikadi said that in spite of several cases of assault on students in the region in the past year, no proper investigation had been conducted by the police department or the government in any case.

Demanding police action, he said that the assault made on two students was an assault on the entire student community. “Affected students are hesitant to report these incidents out of fear. In such cases, police must themselves file cases against the assailants and arrest them under non-bailable charges,” he said, condemning the government for not having taken any measures to eliminate fear among students.

“A safe environment for youth in college campuses should be created by the government, which has been spoilt by troublemakers. Immediate steps should be taken against them,” he said, urging that the assailants should be booked on charges of attempt to murder.

He warned that CFI would take up continuous protests in every district in the state if the police failed to nab the culprits within two days.

District general secretary Imran Thumbay and district committee member Fayaz also addressed the gathering.

State president Iqbal Bellare, district committee member Irshad Bajpe and several others were participated in the demonstration.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
