Houses destroyed as heavy rain lashes across twin districts; Holiday for schools, colleges in Udupi

Udupi, Jul 27: As many as 10 houses were damaged in heavy rain while sea erosion continued in 13 places in Udupi district on Friday.

In addition, one house was completely damaged at Moodbidri following heavy rain.

According to the Udupi Taluk Office, a house each was damaged in Padur, Alevoor and Innanje villages.

According to the Kundapur Taluk Office, a house each was damaged at Shedimane Gulvady and Hardalli-Mandalli villages.

Kundapur Tahsildar Gayatri Naik said flooding had been reported in low-lying areas in Nada and Senapura villages in Byndoor hobli.

According to the Karkala Taluk Office, a house was damaged at Neere village when a tree fell on it. The tiles of Jalaja's house in the same village were blown away due to strong winds accompanying the rains and the loss was estimated at Rs. 10,000.

The tiles of Devaraj Acharya's house in Neera were blown away and the loss was estimated at Rs. 5,000. The cement sheets of Sampa Sabaliga's house were blown away in Nallur village and the damaged was estimated at Rs. 5,000.

T.S. Rathod, Executive Engineer, Department of Ports and Fisheries, said that the sea was rough in the district and sea erosion had continued in Tenka Yermal, Bada Yermal, Udyavara-Padukere, Padukere-Kuthpady, Malpe, Kodikanyana, Kundapur-Kodi, Kotathattu, Mannur-Padukere, Trasi, Marvanthe, Kalihithlu and Dombe.

Roads along the coast were damaged due to sea erosion at Tenka Yermal, Mannur-Padukere, Kalihithlu and Padubidri-Madhwanagara. Several coconut trees had got washed away.

“This is the severest sea erosion reported in the district since 1995,” Mr. Rathod said.

Udupi received a rainfall of 54.4 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Kundapur and Karkala towns received a rainfall of 103.4 mm and 81.8 mm, respectively.

The Meteorological Department had forecast rainfall of over 125 mm in the district in the next 48 hours in the district and fishermen had been advised not to venture into the sea.

The district administration has declared holiday for all schools and colleges in Udupi district on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner M.T. Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support. The 9th Annual Day—EXCELLENTIA—was a memorable and successful event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
