Manipal, Jul 31: An autonomous regulatory body is required to monitor the news channels, accourding to renowned television journalist Rajdeep Sardesai
Speaking at an interaction programme with the students of the School of Communication, Manipal University, here, on Wednesday, Mr Sardesai said that such a regulatory body should not be under government control.
Though a lot of noise was made about self regulation, nothing came about. To a question, he said that corporatisation of television channels was inevitable. Politicians were more accountable than corporates. It was easier to do a sting operation on politicians than on corporate, he said.
On the coverage of Manipal gang-rape case by the media, he said that it was essential not to reveal the identity of the victim in any rape case. The role played by social media in the Delhi gang-rape case had left a lot to be desired.
Mr. Sardesai said sometimes gut feeling helped a journalist to get a story. When a train was burnt at Godhra in Gujarat in 2002, he was tipped off by a police officer about the likelihood of communal riots and he went there and covered it.
Many presspersons had gone to Ayodhya thinking there would be problems there. The Gujarat riots were the first one to be covered round-the-clock by the television channels. Hence its images had stayed in the public mind.
Journalism at its core should be in public interest. “Page 3 stories should not find place on Page 1. Every day is a new day in journalism. You (aspiring journalists) should have your ethical core and know the right from the wrong,” Mr. Sardesai said.
