Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, state CFI president Iqbal Bellare said that the decision taken by the state government was an attempt to remove/replace the system of democracy in colleges.
He said that student union elections in campuses were a sign of democracy at the lowest rung, according to our constitution. A lot of current political leaders such as L K Advani, Veerappa Moily, U T Khader and several others have emerged as leaders from student unions. It is unfortunate that the education department has decided to ban elections while politicians declare slogans of today's youth being the leaders of tomorrow, he said, adding that the decision would also hinder the development of the campuses.
It will also hinder educated students in taking the lead to come forward, he said.
On behalf of the organisation, he demanded that the decision be revoked immediately, failing which CFI would launch intense protests across the state, including a march to college universities.
He added that a memorandum in this regard had been sent to the Chief Minister as well as the education minister of Karnataka.
State CFI secretary Mohammed Tafseer and district general secretary Mohammed Imran were present in the press conference.
