Underworld hand?

According to the police sources Vijayendra Bhat had received threat calls from emerging underworld don Vicky Shetty on July 29. A case had also been filed with Barke police station in this regard.

Soon after the incident sleuths from Barke police Station rushed to the spot. District crime intelligence bureau also inspected the spot and taken the car to police station for further investigation.

The bullet missed Bhat by a few inches and hit the space between the metal frame and rubber beading and shattered the glass. Vijayendra was on his way to his friend's restaurant in Ballalbagh when the incident happened.

Vijayendra Bhat told reporters he received a threatening call from a person who identified himself as Vicky Shetty on July 29. "I noticed a motorcyle following my car this morning. After the incident, I took my car to the premises of Sai Palace Apartment near Mannagudda for safety," he said.

Vijayendra said that he had received a threatening call earlier from the same person. "I gave a written complaint to the police commissioner about that call," he added.

The miscreants slammed into a two-wheeler soon after the incident. While trying to flee the spot, their speeding bike hit the two-wheeler of Nagaraj, an employee of SIM Technology, Mannagudda. Nagaraj and his friend Ajay Anand fell onto the road. "We didn't know that these men were escaping after committing a crime. They managed to lift up their bike and sped away immediately. Sharath, a nearby shopkeeper, tried to follow them but they managed to escape," he added. Barke police registered a case. Police were searching the area for the bullet casing.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
