Mangalore, Aug 4: The situation in Gurupura Kaikamba on the outskirts of Mangalore was tense for a while following a Bajrang Dal attack under the pretext of illegal cattle transportation.
The miscreants claiming to be the members of Bajrang Dal assaulted a local youth who had been returning home after buying a few medicines from a medical store. The injured youth, identified as Shahul Hameed, was rushed to a hospital.
The clash began after a group of Bajrang Dal activists waylaid a vehicle that was carrying three cattle on Saturday evening.
It is learnt that the jurisdictional Bajpe police were waiting to stop the cattle transporting vehicle near Bangalgudde, when the miscreants chased the vehicle from Kaikamba junction and waylaid it.
Three people including the pickup driver who were carrying the vehicle managed to flee the spot immediately.
Meanwhile, a group of local people from Muslim community, who had been returning after evening prayers, confronted the Bajrang Dal activists. A verbal tiff ensued between both groups.
The police later sized the puck up that was carrying the cattle.
As a large number of youth assembled at the spot creating tensed atmosphere, shops were shut down and police platoon arrived at Kaikamba.
Cops turn mute spectators
Amidst the fight, Bajrang Dal activists assaulted the youth who was returning home.
“I was returning home after buying few medicines when a group of miscreants surrounded me and assaulted without any provocation. Even though two police personnel were watching this scene, they did not stop the assailants,” said Shahul Hameed, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The attack comes a day after district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai issued a stern warning against those who take law into their hands in cases such as cattle transportation.
