Mangalore, Aug 4: The members of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) staged a protest in front of Deputy Commissioner's office on Sunday against the pictorial depiction of Jhansi Rani holding hookah in her hand in Social Science text book of 5th standard CBSE syllabus

Addressing the protesters HJS spokesperson Sukanya Acharya said, “In a text book published by Orient Blackswan publication, Jhansi Rani was picturised as holding hookah in her hand. It is insulting and damaging the image of Jhansi Rani. This text book has to be banned immediately and government should take legal action against publishers”, she urged.

She said, “In order to appease minority voters, Congress government has taken step to insult brave lady Jhansi Rani without considering her life. She fought bravely for India and became a role model for many freedom fighters. Picturing such brave lady in an insulting way is the behaviour of traitors. Though government has banned the hookah and smoking in public places, it promoted the use of hookah with school kid with this picture. This will provoke school children to consume drugs”, she blamed.

Lesson on Rahul Gandhi

She also said that the students were being misguided with another new lesson on the life of Rahul Gandhi, which describes him as simple, attractive, humble, and a visionary politician and suggests students to follow his lifestyle.

“The textbook committee is misleading the student community by forcing them to follow in the steps of corrupt politicians,” she alleged.

Prasanna Kamath of HJS speaking at the protest urged for with draw of Tippu University project and change CBSE syllabus featuring Jhansi Rani's picture with hookah.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
