Verbattle zonal selection round begins in Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 5: Verbattle, an inter-school debate tournament for school and college students started on Monday for the Mangalore schools at Don Bosco hall, Mangalore.

This is the 9th edition. Verbattle Junior started in Mangalore with the selection rounds.

Presenter and Founder, Verbattle, Deepak Thimaya said, that the selection process for the first round of Verbattle was conducted for two days in each of the three zones of Karnataka, namely Mangalore, Hubli and Bangalore. The selected teams are then brought to Bangalore, 27 teams from each zone, and in a spread of three weeks, the ensuing events are conducted in Bangalore. The semi-finals and finals for Verbattle Beginner, Verbattle Junior and Senior will be held on August 23rd, 2013. Winners will be given Rs 1 lakh cash as prize, he said.

This event is mainly to bring out hidden talents among youngsters and create a forum to speak. This helps youngsters to get updated with happenings around the world. Also this creates leaders and future politicians too. During the debate participants have to be good listeners, learn to respect others' thoughts, speakers, gain knowledge and develop themselves, he said.

Three teams had to choose topic by sides by chance and speak for subject and one team against the subject.

Nazeer who came to watch his daughters performance in Verbattle said, “While I was studying I did not get such opportunity and now after looking children's performance, I feel, I need to update my knowledge. This is encouraging us to know more and support children to compete with globe”, he said.

“It is my attempt and I came to know only subject matters taught in school are not enough to survive. Along with school subject we need to update general knowledge through avail resources” says Class IX student of Madhav Krupa School, Raghavendra.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
