ZP to take up extensive cleanliness campaign

Mangalore, Aug 8: Dakshina Kannada district, which has already planted flag of success in terms of implementation of sanitation programmes is planning a cleanliness and sanitation campaign in the district, in all the gram panchayats.

Speaking about the same during a meeting, ZP Chief executive Officer Tulasi Maddineni said that as a part of this extensive cleanliness campaign students in schools and colleges will be given with handbooks on cleanliness-importance and various methods of maintaining cleanliness. Compiled in simple language, the book will help students imbibe habits of cleanliness and hygiene. Every house will be explained about waste segregation and management. Even plans for plastic and glass recycling will be introduced in panchayath level so that every village will be free from plastic.

Ms Maddineni said that Several plans of Solid Waste Management, liquid waste management and construction of toilets along highways need to be completed. She said that the ZP is determined to make the district plastic free soon.

Speaking about the steps taken by zilla panchayath in maintaining cleanness district coordinator, Nirmal Bharath Abhiyan, Manjula G said that there are three solid waste yards, of which one at  Mannabettu Kinnigoli is functional. Yedapadvu is getting new SWM plant at a cost of Rs 8.25lakh, Ganjimata at Rs 9.3 lakh and at Kembrale at a cost of Rs 9.18 lakh. They will start functioning soon.

Meanwhile she said that toilets will be constructed at Belwai (Rs 2 lakh), Nellyadi (Rs 10 lakhs), Kalladka (Rs 6 lakh), Talpady (Rs 4 lakh), Ajjavar Sullia (Rs 3.5 lakh) and Shaktinagar at Gurvayankere- Venoor highway (Rs 2 lakh).

Briefing about liquid waste management project Manjula G said, 'plant at Kadaba and Sullia town arefunctional.

New project at Ujire is about to be completed and Kurnadu, Balthila and Golthamajalu panchayat will also receive the same LWM plants.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
