Mangalore, Aug 9: Two Muslim students who organized a treat for their Hindu friends including girls in a hotel in Puttur were threatened and beaten up by Hindutva group members, on Thursday.

The victims are students Abdul Samad (21) and Muhammad Jalal (18), residents of Keremoole in Chikkmudnoor.  While Samad is pursuing his MSW in Srinivas College in Mangalore, Jalal is in II PUC student at Pragathi Study Centre.

It is said that MSW students Deekshit, Lohila Meranda, Shwetha Kumari and Vishwalatha had come to Puttur on a case study of Dharmasthala Gramabhivriddhi Yojane.

However, when Samad came to know about his friends' visit to Puttur he contacted them and asked them to come over for a treat on the occasion of 'Eid-ul-Fitr' to a restaurant.

While the friends were having food in the restaurant a group of men approached them.

“Suraj, Sachin and another person approached us and said why we were dining with Hindu girls. They left the place saying just that,” said Samad and Jalal adding that while they came out of the hotel and boarded an auto, they received a call on their mobile from Sachin who asked them to stop the auto.

“Soon we were taken by 10 men including Sachin and Suraj to an isolated place near Court. They then took us to Panchavati. By this time there were 18 men who assaulted us,” said the two.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
