Mangalore, Aug 14: The problem of maintenance and repair of check-dams in Dakshina Kannada district was discussed during the tri-monthly KDP meeting held at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat here on Wednesday, which was chaired by ZP President Koragappa Naik.

According to the ZP Chief Planning Officer, there were a total of 813 check dams in the district, out of which 230 were in need of repairs. Out of them, there were few dams that were not being used, and few others whose payment was pending, he said.

He informed the ZP president that since no contractors came forward when tenders were called for improvement of vented dams at Valambra and Mundaje villages in Belthangady taluk, the funds had lapsed leading to the closure of the projects.

In response, Koragappa Naik directed the official to submit a detailed report on the total number of vented and check dams, those which required maintenance and those which were not being used.

Electrification of Anganwadi centres

On the issue of electrification of Anganwadi centres, officials from Women and Child Welfare Department said that electricity was yet to be provided to 19 Anganwadis in the district.

They said that wiring had been completed in few Anganwadi centres but electricity was yet to be provided, for which the ZP CEO Tulsi Maddideni replied that merely completion of wiring did not ensure electricity. She instructed the officials to provide the exact details of status of the project.

Housing sites for the poor

Providing the details of housing sites provided to poor families including SC/STs, minorities and physically handicapped under various housing schemes, the executive officers of each taluk presented the number of sites that had been handed over to the reserved categories.

A total of 56 sites in three gram panchayats had been approved by the District Commissioner in Sullia taluk, while sites had been distributed in four gram panchayats in Belthangady taluk. In the Mangalore City Corporation limits, about 800 applications had been selected for sites, the target being 1800. However, title deeds to only 85 sites had been handed over to beneficiaries, due to lack of available housing sites, said an official.

'BPL families can apply online for new ration cards'

For those BPL families who held APL ration cards, provision has been made to apply for new ration cards online through respective gram panchayats in rural areas and through customer service centres in urban areas.

A total of 16,000 applications had been received for new ration cards, out of which 8,000 applications had been received from BPL families. About 5,600 new ration cards had been distributed in the district, while 700 cards were in the process of being printed, said the official concerned.

On the number of borewells that were dug in the district, the official concerned informed that out of the 22 borewells that were planned for the year 2012-13, eight had been dug and 14 cases were pending, for which tenders had been called.

Koragappa Naik instructed the officials of Labour Department to give priority to conduct registration of construction workers and provide them with ID cards. Generate awareness in this regard, he told them.

ZP Vice President Chandrahas Rai and Education and Health Standing Committee President Asha Thimmappa Gowda were present among others.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
