Mathematician Prof Krishnamurthy's birth centenary celebration on Aug 23

Mangalore, Aug 16: St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, has constituted an organising committee for the birth centenary celebrations of Late Prof K A Krishnamurthy, a dedicated teacher and mathematician who had served at the college for four decades. The committee will organise a centenary celebration function in honour of Prof Krishnamurthy on August 23, said president of the committee Walter D'Souza.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that the centenary function would be presided by Chancellor of Nitte University Dr N Vinaya Hegde, and Pro-Chancellor Dr M Shantaram Shetty would be the chief guest.

On the occasion, a souvenir commemorating the services of Prof Krishnamurthy will be released by chairman of Karnataka Bank T Ananthakrishna. The committee will establish an endowment fund in the name of the mathematician to popularise the subject among students. Rector of St Aloysius Institutions Fr Denzil Lobo, Prof R Victor, Prof H Giridhar and Prof K R Upadhyaya will be the guests of honour, he said.

Principal of St Aloysius College and secretary of the committee Fr Swebert D'Silva said that the centenary function would be held at 10 a.m. on the scheduled date in Eric Mathias Hall in the college premises.

Vice-president of the committee Prof Upadhayaya and organising secretary and HOD of Mathematics John Sherra were present.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
