Mangalore, Aug 19: Children in the present day scenario are facing five major problems. Advent of nuclear families is negating interaction among people which is leading to lack of socialization among peers, said Fr Francis D Almeida, campus minister, St Aloysius College.

"This is leading to a situation where children fail to trust others. And parents find it difficult to provide for even two children due to professional and financial stress," he added.

Addressing the parent-teachers association of Besant Women's College here on Saturday, Fr Alemida said, "Pre-occupation of parents with their profession is leading to negligence towards children's activity, and they are getting over exposed to television. This in turn is increasing consumerist attitude and greed to poses more things. Children are also unable to manage failure and this is leading to suicides and them leaving homes."

The other flip side, he warned is growing incompatibility among parents which is leading to individuals seeking happiness and intimacy outside family bonds. "Open communication and value models by parents will help curb negative effects of modern day living on teenagers. Treating girls and boys equally, considering college going students as friends, encouraging them to do their works and take decisions will contribute to their personality," he added.

Manjula KT, former principal was felicitated at the meeting. Responding to the felicitation, Manjula said the PTA has contributed greatly for the college to acquire 'A' grade from NACC .

The NAAC team had appreciated the parents who were most cooperative and contended with the other two components namely teachers and management. She requested PTA members to help the college in becoming self-financed in the future.

Benedicta Mathias was elected president and Prakash Pai vice president of PTA committee for this year. Mohan Nayak, correspondent, presided over the function.
