Delivering the inaugural address at the programme, B Ramanath Rai said that the Land Reforms Act implemented by Devaraj Urs had made a large number of farmers, owners of the land they tilled. He played an important role in helping farmers lead a life of dignity through the land re-distribution programme, he said.
Recalling the contribution of Urs to the development of the state during his term, he spoke about other pro-people programmes implemented by the late Chief Minister such as building shelters for migrant workers, housing for the poor sections of the society, and uplift of backward classes. His dream was to establish a powerful society by strengthening all the classes of the society. He also constructed many hostels for the backward classes, which helped students from rural areas to live and study in cities, he said.
In his presidential address, vice-president of zilla panchayat Rithesh Shetty said that social justice in the society could be seen today mainly due to the efforts of Devaraj Urs, who worked for the uplift of farmers and backward classes.
Prizes were distributed among the winners of an essay competition on the life of Devaraj Urs held for students. Several student achievers from backward classes were also felicitated on the occasion. Bank loan orders were given to three post-graduate students belonging to the minorities. Students having secured highest marks in post-metric examinations and achievers in sports were also felicitated during the programme. Laptops were given to 21 engineering students from the backward classes and minorities.
Deputy Commissioner N Prakash, ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni and others were present on the occasion.
