
H A Siddiq (39), son of late Hayath-ullah, resident of Vidyanagara in Ujire in Belthangady taluk, was arrested by Mangalore city crime branch, after a complaint was filed by the woman at Mangalore South police station, accusing him of conning her and another female acquaintance.
According to the complaint filed on Tuesday, Siddiq had deceived the complainant and led her to believe that he possessed seven antique idols and coaxed her into buying them for a sum of Rs 14 lakhs. The fraud was discovered when the woman took them to be valued and found that they were made of bronze.
Police officials said that the idols were valued at Rs four lakhs in total.
The complaint also named Abdul Razaq Faizi from Nandavar, a soothsayer by profession, as an accused in the case. He is said to be absconding.
Siddiq hails from Bankal town in Chikmagalur district, and has a similar case registered against him in Bankal police station. It is said that he had also duped people in Kundapur, Ujire and Kasargod previously.
