Mangalore, Aug 22: Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (DKMUL), Mangalore has announced a scheme to provide free education for farmers' children wishing to pursue veterinary medicine or agriculture-related courses through Dairy Farmers' Welfare Trust set up for the purpose.

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, president of DKMUL and Dairy Farmers' Welfare Trust Raviraj Hegde said that the Union was in dire need of veterinary doctors for the check-up and treatment of diseases in farm animals such as cattle owned by farmers and milk producers.
There is a requirement for about 750 vets in the state, as most of those veterinarians who passed out of colleges after completing their courses are joining and serving in various governmental departments. Hence, to compensate this need, the Board of directors of the Union has decided to fund the educational and hostel fees of five students who wished to take up veterinary medicine, provided that the students would serve in the Union for a minimum period of five years after completion of their studies, he said.
Educational fees of upto Rs 3 lakhs for each student will be funded by the welfare trust, he said, adding that first preference would be given to farmers' children.
If there are no candidates for this benefit among farmers' children, the Trust will then choose others interested in pursuing the course, he added.
Directors of the Union Diwakar Shetty and Jagadish Shetty, executive director Dr Satyanarayana and trustee Dr Krishna Bhat were present.
