Mangalore, Aug 26: Members of Dakshina Kannada district committee of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday, against the price hike on food items in hotels in the district.

The demonstrators demanded a uniform price system on food and beverages in hotels and restaurants in the district.

Addressing the demonstrators, DYFI district president Muneer Katipalla said that the prices on food items and beverages such as tea and coffee in hotels and restaurants had increased to the extent that those belonging to the labour-class were unable to afford them.

"The pricing policy of the hotels is a burden for the lower classes who feel the pinch of the hike in prices. Due to the economic policies implemented by the government, there is rise in prices of groceries and other commodities in the market today. Such economic policies by the government should be opposed even by the hotel and restaurant owners, as the rising prices on the hotel menu is not in the interest of the general public," he said adding that the elected representatives are blind to the difficulties faced by the people due to price rise.

They understand the difference in prices when they set out for door-to-door campaigning ahead of elections. However, after their victory they do not take any steps to reduce the increase in prices of basic commodities, he said, adding that the district administration should not provide opportunity for hotels to raise the prices on the menu.

Earlier, the demonstrators took part in a rally from the city service bus stop till the DC's office. They urged the district administration to reduce the prices of food items in canteens, high-class hotels and restaurants with attached bars, to a fair level.

The district committee also urged the DC to hold a meeting of hotel owners and union leaders on this issue, and take measures to ensure that all hotels in the district had uniform rates.

Several members including DYFI district secretary Dayanand Shetty, B K Imtiyaz, Mahabal T, Seetharam Shetty and others participated in the demonstration.
