Sexual assault on minor: Madrasa committee members deny allegation

August 28, 2013
Mangalore, Aug 28: In connection with the arrest of a madrasa teacher on charges of sexual assault on a six-year-old girl in Boliyar, on the outskirts of the city, committee members of Mohiuddin Madrasa where the accused is a teacher, alleged that the complaint lodged by the minor's family was malicious in intent and an attempt to defame the accused Abdul Khader Yamani.

Addressing media persons at a press conference here on Wednesday, general secretary of the madrasa committee Mohammed Yusuf said that there was no possibility that an act of sexual assault could have occurred within the walls of the madrasa, and stressed that the allegation was a pre-planned conspiracy by a faction of the Jamaat in Boliyar.

The complaint is false and such an act has not occurred. Abdul Khader Yamani has been serving as a teacher in the madrasa from the past one year, and the allegation is an attempt to remove him from his post. It is a conspiracy by a faction of the Jamaat who were opposed to the management board of the madrasa over the issue of textbooks, he alleged.

However, when asked about having conducted any internal inquiry in the matter of the sexual assault of the girl, the committee members said that the committee had “discussions” with the family of the girl when the incident came to light on Saturday.

“We were not given a chance to conduct an inquiry as the teacher was arrested by the police on Sunday morning. The police did not even inform the madrasa committee,” they argued, terming it as a police atrocity.

The members also said that the management did not feel the need to suspend the accused when the incident came to light. They said that the management was unaware of the sexual harassment case registered against Yamani at Manjeshwar police station, while later stating that there was no connection between the two separate incidents.

Upon further questioning, the committee members admitted that they had appointed the teacher on the basis of his experience certificate, without enquiring about his background and history. They said that in future, the madrasa would appoint a teacher only after taking steps to verify his background.

It can be recalled that the police arrested Abdul Khader Yamani on Sunday, and a case has been registered by Konaje police.

Boliyar Jamaat committee president Abdul Rahman and members S Aboobakker, Hyder and S I Khan Musliyar were present in the press conference.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
