Young scientists display 67 models at INSEF-2013

Mangalore, Sep 6: Young scientists from Udupi, Puttur and Mangalore exhibited their models at regional science fair INSEF 2013 organised by The Yenepoya School with the collaboration of Science Society of India at The Yenopoya School here on Friday.

As many as 67 science models on environment, mechanical, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computer science made by the students in junior and senior categories, selected for regional level science fair are being judged for the final round on Friday. Best five among 67 science models judged by experts will be taken for national level science fair.

Director of NITK, Suratkal, Prof. Swapan Bhattacharya inaugurated the formal function of INSEF 2013 at The Yenepoya School and delivering his inaugural address he said that science is close to human life and India is next to China in using technology.

Lamenting that the interest of students is diminishing on science, he said that the scientific mind set has to be developed among the present generation, which will help them in having logical and rational thinking.

Prof Bhattacharya also urged the students to respect their mother tongue and not ignore it due to the sway of universal language.

“Attraction towards foreign language is a dangerous trend”, he said.

Prof Bhattacharya said that profession should become passion but not by force. When one takes profession by passion then only he can succeed and parents should see to it that their children are not forced," he said.

Dr BV Sathyanarayana, MD, DK Cooperative Milk Producers' Union said, “human beings depend on nature and every invention should aim at protecting nature and environment”, he said.

Attractive science models

Science models prepared by student participants from different schools of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmangalore and Udupi are displayed in science fair. Akshay and Mohemmed Tashish of class 9 of Indraprasta Vidyalaya, Uppinangady prepared stove which helps to control global warming.

More than 20 eco-friendly pesticides made using herbals ingrediently easily available were displayed at the fair. G Ashwini and Padavishree students of class 9 of Mount Carmel girls high school, briefing about their insecticide said that it has been prepared using orange peel and salt.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

• Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

• STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

• Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
