Official sources in New Delhi said the Indian Mission in Muscat had taken up the matter with the local authorities over the weekend and was assured that necessary action would be taken.

Early Monday, the Omani police rescued the kidnapped Indian national. “Apparently, two of the seven Pakistani nationals involved have also been arrested,” they said.

Meanwhile, the family of the worker identified as Haneefa from Kerala had received calls demanding a huge ransom for his release, media reports said. Later, his family reportedly received phone calls from Oman by “Urdu-speaking people” demanding money. “They were calling from Internet phones. Later, when we stopped receiving those calls, we discovered they had pressured Haneefa to make calls from his own number,” his family said.

The family said that initially, the callers demanded OMR 2,000 ($5,201) within 24 hours for his release, but later the demands were changed.
