SIO demands cheaper bus fares for students

September 29, 2013
Mangalore, Sep 29: A small group of people under the banner of the Students Islamic Organisation staged a demonstration in the city demanding cheaper bus fares for students.

The protesters, who gathered in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Saturday, urged the government not to disregard the problems of student community.

Addressing the protesters, Abdul Latheef, City Secretary of the organisation said that most of the government school students hailed from poor family back ground and they could not afford the bus fare.

“The minimum fare in private buses was Rs. 5, which many students could not afford. This should be made Re. 1,” he said.

The protesters also alleged that students were being harassed by bus conductors when they produce a bus pass.

“There have been many complaints of harassment and sexual harassment against conductors. The district administration should take action against this, and ensure conductors of buses are given behavioural training,” they said.

They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
