Top cops rubbish media reports; rule out Mangalore connection to Patna blasts

: In a big relief to the peace-loving citizens of Mangalore, top police officers of Karnataka and Bihar have rubbished the media reports of terror links to this port city. They have also ruled the media's claim that a woman who was arrested in Mangalore had involved in terrorism.

Aasha alias Ayisha Banu, resident of Panjimogaru on the outskirts of city, was reportedly arrested at Mangalore International Airport by the Bihar police on Tuesday. Many local newspapers, TV channels and portals had alleged that the woman was arrested in connection with Patna serial blasts of October 27, wherein seven people were killed and around hundred people were injured.

Brushing aside the reports on Mangalore link to Patna blasts, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Prathap Reddy said he was sure that no investigation was underway pertaining to any terror activities in the Western Range.

“No investigation agency has contacted us in Dakshina Kannada. They would certainly contact us if there is requisite,” he said.

Bihar Police who were in city to take Aasha alias Ayisha to North Indian state also denied terror link to the arrested woman.

Lakhisarai Superintendent of Police Rajiv Sharma said that she was arrested in connection with illegal financial activities. He said that Patna serial blasts which occurred on October 27 this year would not come under his jurisdiction.

“We found Aasha's involvement in a case of illegal money transaction which was being investigated in a police station in Bihar. Two police from the station had arrived two days ago and took her into custody for further interrogation,” he said.

He, however, refused divulging more details on the matter.

Mangalore city DCP (Law and Order) Dr K V Jagadeesh also brushed aside media reports linking Mangalore to Patna blasts.

He said police have no information on money supplied to Patna blasts from Mangalore.

“Neither we have taken media reports seriously nor Lakhisarai police contacted us on that matter. We have no information of any investigation agency visiting Mangalore or interrogating any Mangalorean in any terror case,” he confirmed.

‘Profit’ trap: Mangaluru trader duped of ₹33.1 lakh in online App scam

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
