The railway under bridge is being constructed in lieu of the existing manned level-crossing on Padil - Bajal road as a cost-sharing project by the state government and the railways department. After the foundation stone for the new RUB was laid at the level crossing in August 2014, the construction works have already been completed using the box-pushing technology.

Although it was expected to be completed by February 2015, the construction of a feasible approach road on the RUB has remained pending due to some technical issues at the site.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the construction works on Monday, Mr Nalin Kumar said that the construction work of the railway under bridge was ongoing at a brisk pace. The remainder of the construction work has been hindered owing to few technical problems concerning the construction of the approach road. After conducting an inspection, it has been directed to work out the technical problems and continue the work speedily, he said.

After the railway department completes the work on RUB, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has to progress with the construction of an approach road.

Mr Nalin Kumar assured that the remainder of the construction work would be completed in a few weeks’ time by the end of October. Similarly, both the railway over bridge projects at Baikampady and B C Road will be completed in time within May 31. The flyover projects at Pumpwell and Thokkottu will be completed by November, he said.

He also informed that a sum of Rs 22.5 crore had been sanctioned for the widening of B C Road – Charmadi highway by the union government while a sum of Rs 7 crore had been sanctioned for the maintenance of B C Road – Mani highway.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Lobo said that since there was a problem of a running stream adjacent to the RUB on Padil-Bajal road, the construction of the approach road had been hindered. It will be contemplated whether the base of the bridge should be raised to overcome the problem or find an alternate plan, after which the approach road will be constructed under the existing level crossing, he said.

He said that the construction work had to be extended upto October with the delay in construction of approach road due to technical issues. For the convenience of the local residents and daily commuters, an approach road from Yekkur to Padil will be opened up until the RUB project is completed, he told reporters.

Mr Nalin also told reporters that most of the concretisation work of the 13-km stretch in Shiradi Ghat had been completed and tenders had been called for concretisation of the next stretch in the ghat.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
