Chief Justice Waghela to inaugurate new court complex in Moodbidri, workshops

Mangalore, Feb 6: Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dakshina Kannada Uma M G said that Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka Justice D H Waghela would inaugurate a one-day workshop and interaction on ‘Juvenile Justice Act’ and ‘Child Protection’ at Nethravathi auditorium at Zilla Panchayat here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, she said that the workshop would be jointly organized by Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada District Legal Services Authority, Mangaluru, D K District Administration, Juvenile Justice Board, District Child Protection Unit, Mangalore Bar Association, Department of Women and Child Development and Child Welfare Committee, Mangaluru. The workshop will be inaugurated at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday and presided over by Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh. Justice Abdul Nazeer amd Justice A N Venugopala Gowda will be the chief guests on the occasion. Member secretary of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority Ashok G Nijagannavar will be the convenor and chairman of Karnataka State Bar Council P P Hegde, D K deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, Zilla Panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddideni, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Murugan and D K Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa will be the special invitees in the inaugural programme, she said.

She said that there will be sessions on Juvenile Justice Act, Child Mental Health and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) followed by an interaction session in the workshop.

Inauguration of Law Workshop

Mrs Uma M G said that the Mangalore Bar Association in association with Karnataka State Bar Council, Bengaluru will conduct a workshop on Law for advocates on Saturday in the district court premises. The workshop will be inaugurated at 5 p.m. on Saturday by Justice D H Waghela, she said.

The newly constructed court complex at Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada completed on July 7, 2014 would be inaugurated by Justice D H Waghela on Sunday, in the presence of Justice A N Venugopala Gowda, Justice N K Patil, Justice S Abdul Nazeer, D K District In-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, Youth Service and Sports minister Abhayachandra Jain and others, she said.

The new court complex will have two court halls and three storeys, along with parking spaces and other facilities, she said, adding that a total of 1,831 cases related to Moodbidri taluk had been pending in court as of January 31, 2015.

Senior civil judge B Ganesh, president of Mangalore Bar Association S P Chengappa and others were present in the press conference.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
