Mangalore, September 17: Masjidun Noor, which created history by arranging a place for women inside the Masjid for the first time in the city over two decades ago, witnessed a strange Jum'a on Friday, September 17.

As Moulana Abdul Azeez, the Khateeb of the Masjid delivered a meaningful sermon emphasising unity among Muslim Ummmah and calling upon the believers to strive towards promoting mutual understanding, two groups of people were engaged in a scuffle inside the Masjid premises.

Quarrel broke out between two groups – with one going to the extent of pushing the women who entered the Masjid in order to offer Salah, and the other, who attempted to defend the womenfolk. Fortunately, both parties realised a few minutes later that it was a place of worship and they had to prepare for Salah.

Background

According to the management of the Masjid, the mosque does not belong to any particular group of Muslims but people of all groups have been offering Salah in the mosque without any problem since its establishment in 1988.

In fact it was the first Masjid in the city of Mangalore, which set aside a separate place for women to offer Namaz. Every day from Fajr to Isha women are allowed to offer Namaz in the Masjid without any problem.

But the management of the Masjid had restricted women's participation in Friday's special prayer because of the lack of space for worshippers.

“We do not have any objection on women entering the Masjid or offering Salah. But how can we give an entire room that could accommodate 200 men to hardly 15 women for Jum'a Namaz? Moreover there is no adequate place for men who come for prayers on Friday in the Masjid”, said one of the trustees of the Masjid on condition of anonymity.

To the court:

Questioning the Masjid management for the restriction on them, 11 women had approached the High Court of Karnataka recently and appealed to direct the management committee of the Masjid to allow them to offer Friday prayer.

According to the management committee, the High Court has asked them to allow these 11 women to offer Eid-ul-Fitr and Jum'a prayers last Friday, September 10. However the court did not issue an ultimate verdict in this issue.

But this Friday, when the same group of women entered the Masjid along with their male family members and supporters, they found no place for them inside, as men had already occupied the room.

When the women's supporters asked the men inside the women's section to go out, they refused. A scuffle broke out between the two groups at this juncture in front of media persons and police helplessly stood watching the scene hesitating to enter into the Masjid.

Finally women offered the Jum'a Salah outside the room, which had already been occupied by men.

The management committee of the Masjid however said that it was “not a serious issue”.

“I don't understand why these people quarrel for silly reasons. If there is no place for women, let them arrange place for them rather than spoiling the peaceful atmosphere. I am offering Namaz in this Masjid since 1995 and my wife also offers Namaz in the Masjid. But we have never witnessed such a strange development in this Masjid”, said one of the worshippers in the Masjid.

Arif Mulki, a resident of Mangalore held the management committee responsible for the entire issue. “Normally I offer prayer in this Masjid and I know that apart from Jum'a women are allowed for every Salah here. But it was the responsibility of management to arrange place for women this week as the court had asked them to allow women”, he said.

Umer UH, a social activist said that this Masjid is under a Trust and not under any sect or group. The management of the Masjid has taken a decision to not allow women for Jum'a Salah only because of the lack of place and not because of any differences. If they reserved a 250-people capacity room for a dozen women, those 250 people have to stand outside the Masjid, he opined.

Bengaluru, May 18: JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who turned 92 on Saturday, broke his silence on the sexual abuse charges leveled against his grandson and MP Prajwal Revanna. He stated that he has no objection to the action taken against him if found guilty. However, he mentioned that the cases against his son, JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, who is facing charges of sexual harassment and kidnapping of a woman, were 'created'. He refrained from further commenting as the matter is sub judice.

Recently, Gowda announced his decision not to celebrate his birthday and requested well-wishers and party workers to wish him from wherever they are.

"... I don't want to comment on things that are going on in the court regarding Revanna. Prajwal Revanna has gone abroad. Regarding that, Kumaraswamy (Gowda's other son and state JD(S) chief) has, on behalf of our family, said it is the duty of the government to take action in accordance with the law of the land," Gowda said.

Addressing reporters, the former PM said, "There are several people connected to these sexual abuse cases. I don't want to mention anyone's names. Kumaraswamy has stated that those involved in this matter should face action, and the affected women should get justice and compensation."

"There is no objection from us to taking action against Prajwal. But people have come to know the facts about the allegations made against Revanna, how the case has been created. In one case, he has been granted bail, and in another case, the judgment is expected day after tomorrow... I don't want to comment on it," he said, concurring with Kumaraswamy's statement that if found guilty, no one should be spared.

Prajwal (33) is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women. The scandal has sparked a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27 and is still at large. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice has been issued against him in an effort to bring him back.

He was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls on April 26.

Meanwhile, Gowda's 66-year-old son, Revanna, a former Minister, has been granted interim anticipatory bail from a court here in a sexual harassment case in which his son Prajwal is also an accused.

Asked whether there was a conspiracy to defame and politically scuttle his family, Gowda said, "It is true... considering all that has happened, several people are involved. I won't mention names. Kumaraswamy will address what action needs to be taken."

Responding to a query on BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda's allegations that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is behind the circulation of a pen drive containing explicit videos involving Prajwal Revanna, Gowda said Kumaraswamy will respond to all of this.

"We have seen in the media what Devaraje Gowda has said. Kumaraswamy, as the party's state President, has been actively responding to all this. He will speak. I won't at this point. I had campaigned for the Lok Sabha polls. On June 4, after the Lok Sabha poll results are announced, I will meet with you (media)," he added.

Gowda also appealed to media persons campaigning near his house to end it. "I also appeal to your owners."

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Monday led a delegation to the Passport Seva Kendra in Mangaluru, urging the authorities to provide basic facilities for applicants. D’Souza addressed the media, highlighting the lack of essential amenities at the Mangaluru PSK. “I have requested the authorities to provide basic facilities for people visiting the PSK.

There are no chairs for the convenience of people who arrive at the PSK. They are forced to sit or stand by the side of the road or on footpaths. Additionally, there is no parking facility, no washrooms, and water has not been provided for the public,” the Congress leader stated.

An average of 500 to 600 people from various parts of the state visit the PSK. They have to wait in the scorching heat of the sun, D’Souza mentioned, urging the govt to address these issues promptly. “Officials have agreed to find solutions to the problems faced by the people. Meanwhile, we have also demanded that the PSK be relocated to a more convenient space. We have suggested that the PSK could be moved to the old DC’s office, where there is sufficient space. If our demands are not met, we will hold a protest,” D’Souza explained.

Ashraf Kinara, vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada Waqf Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating that the authorities should either provide all basic facilities for passport applicants at the PSK or relocate the centre to a better location.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.
