Mangaluru: Two drown, seven rescued at Sasihithlu beach

Mangaluru, Jan 10: Two people drowned while 7 others were rescued when they were caught in strong waves in the sea at Munda Beach in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka on Sunday evening.

Police said on Monday that a nine-member group, who had gone to the beach near Sasihithlu, were caught in the strong waves while swimming. Fishermen rescued seven of them.

The body of Sunder (45) was fished out, while search is on to trace the one more person identified as Damodar (55).

The group had come from Thokur to attend a family function and went to the beach. They entered the waters despite warnings by local people. The rescued people have been admitted to a local hospital.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: The beginning of 2021-22 academic year in Karnataka will be delayed at least by 45 days and it will begin from July 15.

The Department of Public Instruction has decided to start classes for the 2021-22 academic year on July 15, 2021, as against June 1, usually done. Covid pandemic has derailed the academic calendar this year.

According to the department officials, considering that the examination for class 10 and 12 will be held in May/June, the evaluation work will be completed by the third week of June. 

It has been decided to declare the results of both classes 10 and 12 before June-end, and give a few days’ break for the teachers, before commencing classes for the next academic year,” said an official.

Mysuru, Feb 17: It will put an end to the concept of appointing guest lecturers if the Chief Minister approves for the appointment of 8000 lecturers, for whom the demand has been already submitted, Deputy Chief Minister Dr.C.N.Ashwatha Narayana, who also holds higher education portfolio, said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media after visiting government first grade women’s college here, he said, the demand has been submitted to the Chief Minister who also holds the department of finance in the pre budget meeting.

The appointment of lecturers on a permanent basis would help to maintain quality of teaching which is one of the primary objectives of the national education policy, he opined.

So far only 2% of the budget allocation was being given to the higher education and it has been urged to increase it 3.5% for which the chief has responded in positive, he said.

All the guest lecturers who worked in the last academic year are being continued for this year also and their demands including hike in payment, regularization of their services will be reviewed, he added.

He assured a fund of each 2 crore rupees for government first grade college and woman’s college located in the town.

Kasaragod, Feb 21: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate 'Vijaya Yatra,' led by Kerala BJP President K Surendran here on Sunday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the concluding day of the Vijaya Yatra in Thiruvananthapuram on March 7.

Talking to newspersons here, K Surendran said the Yatra will highlight various issues including, a corruption-free Kerala, anti-appeasement politics and comprehensive development of Kerala.

On Metroman E Sreedharan’s decision to join BJP, he said several popular faces would declare their allegiance to BJP during the Yatra.

E Sreedharan is also an able person to become the Chief Minister of Kerala, he added.

About the Yatra, he said as many as 14 Maha rallies and 80 public meetings would be organised as part of the Yatra, which is part of party's Assembly election campaign in Kerala.
