Peaceful bandh in Manjanady-Montugoli in protest against stabbing

Mangaluru, Nov 15: A day after a 10-year-old madrasa student was stabbed by the motorbike-borne miscreants, Manjanady and Montugoli villages under the limits of Konaje police station on Tuesday observed a self-motivated bandh.

The peaceful bandh was the collective decision of the villagers to exert pressure on the police department to nab the culprits who attacked a minor boy without any provocation and caused fear among public.

All the shops were closed in both the villages. The residents also staged road blocks at Manjanady and Montugoli junctions for several hours and raised slogans against communal forces.

Konaje police visited the protest spots and urged the agitators to end the road blocks assuring them to nab the stabbers. However, the residents refused to end the road blocks.

The protest led to traffic disruption on Mudipu-Manjanady-Thokkottu road till evening. Buses from Mudipu reached Thokkottu via Konaje.

Manjanady Panchayat office and Co-operative bank were also remained shut causing inconvenience to the people who had to exchange old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

The school wherein the attacked madrasa student studies also declared holiday. Police have beefed up security in the region.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
