Bengaluru, Aug 6: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take over the investigation into the recent blast at Mysuru court as preliminary probe has revealed striking similarities with the blasts that took place on the court premises in Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh and Kollam in Kerala.
The blast on the Chittoor court premises had taken place on April 7, 2016 while the blast at Kollam occured on June 15, 2016. Sources said a similar type of 9v batteries were used in all the three blasts. The perpetrators had used 10 batteries in Kollam and 14 in Chittoor. The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) used in Mysuru had 12 batteries. The `Murugan' brand pressure cooker, which is not a fast moving product and a piece of Malayalam newspaper found at blast site have given indication to the investigating teams that all the three explosions could be the handiwork of a same outfit.
The pressure cookers were used in these blasts like a missile to intensify the impact.
The Mysuru blast site has revealed that a mix of potassium chlorite and gunpowder was used for the explosion. Though a single 9v battery is sufficient to trigger the IED, the perpetrators seemed to have used more number of batteries in all the three blasts only to ensure heat transmission, sources said.
Officials privy to the probe said that initial investigation into the Chittoor and Kollam blasts have indicted the possible involvement of a Tamil Nadu outfit Al Ummah, which recently has been proclaiming itself as the `Base Movement' outfit after allying with the al-Qaeda.
The outfit had claimed responsibility for the Chittoor blast through a letter sent to a government office.
Sources in the state government confirmed that the state has agreed to the hand over the Mysuru blast case to the NIA.
“Since there are striking similarities with the blasts that took place in the court premises in neighbouring states, the government has decided to hand over the probe to the NIA. The NIA and the intelligence agencies in Andhra Pradesh have also suspected the role of certain persons from the Al Ummah outfit who are active in parts of Tamil Nadu
and Kerala,'' a senior official said.
