Nipah test on two Mangaluru patients yield negative results; vigil continues

Mangaluru, May 24: People in coastal Karnataka heaved a sigh of relief as two suspected cases of Nipah virus in Mangaluru finally proved negative.

The PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test of the throat swabs of two patients in Mangaluru, sent to Manipal Centre for Virus Research to ascertain if they have Nipah, has been found negative, according to M. Ramakrishna Rao, Dakshina Kannada District Health and Family Welfare Officer.

Meanwhile, all staff of Kerala-bound Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses have been asked to take adequate precautions. Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner K.A. Dayanand said 183 schedules operate between Karnataka and Kerala daily. If any of the drivers and conductors of these buses fall sick or avail sick leave, health authorities should be informed, he said.

‘Don’t trust social media’

Meanwhile Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. has asked people not to be carried away by messages posted on WhatsApp groups and Facebook claiming to provide treatment for Nipah virus.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Senthil said that messages providing treatment was being circulated on the social media. “This is not the recommended treatment. Do not believe what is posted on social media,” he said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
