Speaking at the winter session of the Legislative Council at Belagavi, the minister said that without a proposal from the corporation the state could not take any step in this regard.

Responding to a query by Ivan D'Souza, MLC, Mr Sorake said that he had directed the corporation to send a proposal on these lines to the State government about a year ago.

The minister also said that the State government had not received any guidelines from the Union government for including Mangaluru under its smart city project. The matter would be examined after receiving the guidelines.

It could be recalled here that J R Lobo, MLA, Mangaluru City South, and Mahabala Marla, Mayor, Mangaluru City Corporation, had voiced against Greater Mangaluru project.

Mr Marla had recently said that the Corporation was not in a position to spend on development works in areas to be merged under Greater Mangaluru project.

œNot much revenue can be expected from areas Mulky. We can consider it at a later stage when the existing areas get developed using funds available under the Smart City scheme, he said.

Marla said that the Corporation will include Moodshedde and Bala gram panchayat areas in its limits to stake claim to be part of the Smart City scheme of the Union government. At present, the population in the corporation limits, as per 2011 census, is a little over 4.99 lakh ” falling short by a fewer than 1,000 ” to be eligible for the Smart City project announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
