Bengaluru, Nov 19: The high court passed an interim order on Friday, asking the government to ensure no Kambala races are held till November 26. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee passed the order and adjourned the hearing to November 22 on a PIL filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) India.
The court recorded the statement made by counsel on behalf of District Kambala Committee, Udupi, as well as Vijaya Vikram Jodukare Committee, Uppinangadi in Dakshina Kannada district, that they would not hold Kambala race on November 19 as the proposed race has been rescheduled to November 26.
The petitioner urged the court to quash the December 17, 2015 notification issued by the department of animal husbandry and fisheries permitting Kambala.They also urged the court to issue a directive prohibiting any event being organized based on the government notification.
Quoting the Constitution, the petitioner said animals must be treated with compassion and their right to life should not be affected. To bolster its case, the plea cited the Supreme Court judgment that prohibits all events like Jallikattu and bullock-cart races, which would include Kambala and Kambala-like events.
