Mangaluru, Nov 21: This year there will be no Kambala (slush track buffalo race) this year in Tulu Nadu. The recent Supreme Court order banning all events construed as cruelty to animals has put an end to the annual slush race of buffaloes in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services on Friday formally banned kambala' in Dakshina Kannada. This follows the banning of the sport in Udupi district on last week.
“The State would give an appeal to the Board on allowing kambala'. Until a clarification or modification is issued, the ban will be enforced,” Mr. Thippeswamy said. Mr. Ibrahim said the decision had been taken by the Animal Husbandry department after discussion with the district administration.
“The opposition to the ban was discussed, but the request of the Animal Welfare Board had to be followed,” he said, adding that the government-organised kambala at Pilikula would be cancelled. A Kambala scheduled for this Sunday in Surathkal will also not be held.
The Animal Welfare Board, in its letter dated November 13 to the Udupi district administration, had directed it to restrict Kambala. Accordingly, the Udupi deputy commissioner had restricted the organisers not to conduct the sport scheduled to have begun on November 15 and concluded to March 28, 2015.
The letter had referred to the Supreme Court order passed on May 7, 2014, banning all such events including Jallikattu and bullock-cart races. It had said: “Bulls cannot be used as performing animals, either for the Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or elsewhere.”
