No org in DK can collect donation for Chennai victims: AB Ibrahim

Mangaluru, Dec 5: No individual or organisation in Dakshina Kannada is authorised collect donation for the flood-affected people in Chennai, clarified A.B. Ibrahim, the Deputy Commissioner of the district.

In a release issued here, he said that it has come to the notice of the government that some organisations and individuals have launched an initiative to collect donations.

The Tamil Nadu government has made it clear that it did not require any donation or material from other States.

Hence, Dakshina Kannada district administration was not collecting any material in cash or kind. People should not donate goods and cash to anybody. If such instances were noticed, people can complain to the office of the Deputy Commissioner on the toll free number 1077.

If anybody from the State living in Chennai required assistance or to be rescued in this time of crisis, their relatives or friends could call the toll free number 1070 or 080-22340676.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
