No secret pact with Congress for 2018 Assembly polls: HDK

May 2, 2017

Bengaluru, May 2: JD(S) state president H?D Kumaraswamy has said that his party is not a slave to either Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or the Congress party.

Addressing the reporters in Bengaluru on Monday, he said a section of the media has reported that there has been a secret understanding for the select 154 Assembly seats between the Congress and the JD(S) for the 2018 Assembly elections. The source for this report is the chief minister’s office, he charged.

“Why will be there an understanding between the two parties? Has this government provided succor to farmers and employment to youths? Let the Congress not misuse the name of the JD(S) to retain power. Nobody has surrendered the party to the Congress. The JD(S) wants to come to power,” he said.

Kumaraswamy said he would be touring certain districts of the north Karnataka from May 5 for a month to strengthen the party. A good number of programmes have been lined up, he added.

Stating that corruption is rampant in the state, Kumaraswamy said the Congress MLA of Tiptur in Tumakuru district had recently said that he had no money during the last elections. But this time, he has Rs 10 crore. “How did he become so resourceful? The chief minister should have sought an explanation from him. May be the chief minister himself is going to distribute money to the MLAs,” he said sarcastically.

Asked whether he would be lending support to the library supervisors’ protest demanding increase in salaries, the former chief minister replied in the positive. The protest rally is scheduled to be held at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

“I am told a CD, showing Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait demanding a bribe of Rs six crore to meet the demand of the gram panchayat library supervisors, would be released at the rally. I spoke to Sait. He told me that he is unaware of it. He also said that without his knowledge, probably his driver or a PA of some minister must have raised money,” Kumaraswamy said.

Movie on Kumaraswamy

Kumaraswamy said he has given his consent for a movie that is being made on him. The movie, Bhoomiputra, may become a positive or a negative factor for him, he added.

Director S Narayan has announced that he would direct the movie based on the 20-month rule of Kumaraswamy as chief minister. Arjun Sarja would play the role of Kumaraswamy in the movie.

“The producer is one Prabhu. I believe he was benefited immensely because of a decision I had taken as chief minister. Hence, he wants to produce the movie. He is taking risk,” he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
