Bengaluru, Aug 22: With the intention of providing reliable transport service to commuters in the state capital without the usual haggling and extra charges, a city-based NGO called Salaam Centre has introduced few auto-rickshaws which have been plying for over a month in the city.

Although a few in number, the NGO Salaam Centre aims to change the trend of auto drivers charging extra money from the commuters on a regular basis, with the introduction of eight Salaam Autos in the city.

Plying in areas of Bengaluru North such as Shivajinagar and RT Nagar, the auto drivers take the passengers to their preferred destination without charging extra one-and-a-half fare before 10 PM. These autos also run with untampered meters to avoid fares higher than fixed rates, and give 50 percent concession on the incurred fare to differently-abled passengers.

Apart from an assurance of providing hassle-free commuting, another noteworthy feature of the Salaam Autos is plying with booklets which explain the fundamental concept and principles of Islam in over five languages. The booklets have been incorporated to dispel the general misconceptions associated with Islam and Muslims in the society and the outer world. During their commute, the passengers have the opportunity to go through the booklets and learn more about the Islamic way of life.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, founder-chairman of Salaam Centre Syed Hamid Mohsin said that the basic intention of the initiative was to change the trend of auto drivers charging extra money from passengers in busy locations in Bengaluru. "With Salaam Autos, we hope to start a new trend of auto rickshaws with friendlier drivers, who are selected based on their honest behaviour," he said.

To facilitate the initiative, Mr Mohsin used the funds he had set aside for Hajj pilgrimage this year. "Although I had initially made plans to go on a pilgrimage to Makkah, I changed my mind and decided to utilise the sum of Rs 15 lakh towards social service instead. In this regard, the concept of Salaam Autos came into being," he said.

He said that there were plans of unveiling additional Salaam autos in the city in the coming days.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
