Bengaluru, Dec 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested K Michael, a senior special assistant in the Issue Department of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for helping one of his friends convert up to Rs 6 lakh worth of demonetised notes into new currency.

The exchange of demonetised notes was done at State Bank of Mysore's (SBM) Kollegal branch in Chamarajanagar district. The CBI had registered an FIR against Parashiva Murthy, head cashier of the bank, and others for allowing exchange of demonetised notes in violation of RBI rules.

An official said SBM's Kollegal branch has a currency chest and it supplies notes to nearby branches. On November 8, Michael had been to Kollegal to refill currency when the demonetisation was announced at night. Michael, the CBI officials said, helped one of his friends to exchange demonetised notes for Rs 100 bills at the bank without following the documentation stipulated.

The CBI earlier had arrested Parashiva Murthy and a private person for helping many individuals exchange demonetised notes.

Murthy is the custodian of the currency chest at Kollegal branch and had entered into a conspiracy with a few other bank officials to exchange the demonetised notes.

Murthy had disbursed Rs 1.51 crore worth of new notes between November 11 and 13 without obtaining application for exchange with proof of ID or approval of the branch head. The accused had allowed the exchange of old notes with Rs 100 bills to some select individuals in violation of the rules and without the approval of the branch head.

The demonetised notes received thereafter were deposited into the currency chest of the branch along with the other old cash disguising it as genuinely exchanged currency.

RBI clarification

RBI deputy governor S S Mundra clarified that it was a junior functionary who was recorded to be present at a bank branch where some suspected transaction was happening. “We have instituted an investigation and due action would be taken once the details are ascertained. The RBI is coordinating and collaborating with various investigative agencies whenever they flag details of the suspicious transactions,'' he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
