48-year-old Abubacker, who had come from Saudi Arabia to his homeland, had gone missing on September 10 from Mangaluru. Rumours have been doing rounds that Abubacker had left for Kerala from Mangaluru through a train. However, the family members and police are still clueless whether he was kidnapped by miscreants are went somewhere on his own.

Abubacker, a supervisor at the Al-Sadhan Hyper Market in Riyadh, had come home with his wife and children in August on a short vacation. He was staying in the house of his brother-in-law Ismail in Jokatte in Mangaluru taluk.

On September 10, he left for Mangaluru city reportedly to reschedule his return ticket Saudi Arabia. He was supposed to report for work before Eid-ul-Adha. However, he had planned to extend the vacation for a few days and celebrate the festival in India.

According his family sources, Abubacker contacted his wife over phone around 2 p.m. from Mangaluru and told her that he would go to Padubidri to see his mother and other family members and then come back. But, he neither visited his mother's home at Padubidri nor returned to Jokatte.

The family members started searching for him after finding that his mobile phone had been switched off. Ismail filed a missing compliant with Panambur police the next day.

In an appeal, P A Mohiuddin, an inspector in Border Security Forces, who is also a relative of missing person, has urged the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar to look into the matter personally and take necessary steps to exacerbate the search operation.

“His wife and children are now completely shattered lots. Now the onus to trace him out rests with the police,” he said while expressing concern that police could not gather any information about the missing person after his disappearance.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
