Bengaluru, Jan 7: The State president of National Students' Union of India (NSUI), S V Siddaveer, who had attempted suicide by consuming poison on January 2, died at a private hospital in the early hours of Tuesday. The NSUI is the Congress' student wing.

Siddaveer, 29, an active worker of the Congress party for nearly a decade, was a native of Kanakapura taluk in Ramanagara district. On January 2, he consumed food laced with poison at his home in Bairaweshwaranagar in Chandra Layout, the police said. He then called up his friends living in the nearby Nagarabhavi locality, telling them he had consumed poison. They rushed to his house and found him lying on the floor and frothing at the mouth. They took him to a private hospital in Vijayanagar where doctors concluded he had indeed consumed poison.

He was taken to another private hospital on January 5 after his condition worsened. A purported suicide note found at his home stated he himself was responsible for the extreme act. According to police, some of Siddaveer's friends said he had told them he was œfed up with life and didn't have the zeal to live anymore and wanted to end his life.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
