Open fire if cattle traffickers attack you: Udupi SP tells subordinates

Udupi, Sep 17: Issuing a stern warning to cattle “traffickers” ahead of Ganeshotsava and Bakrid festival, Annamalai K, the Superintendent of Police of Udupi said that he had directed his subordinates to open fire in self-defence if they were attacked by those who transport cattle illegally.

He was speaking at a ‘peace meeting’ organized in view of forthcoming Muslim and Hindu festivals. He urged the religious leaders and representatives of religious organizations and political parties present in the meeting to cooperate with the police to maintain peace in the district. The SP said that check-posts are being installed across the district.

He appealed to the people of two communities to celebrate the festivals in accordance with the norms put up by the police department. He promised all support to the celebrations and said unnecessary meetings and processions in the name of festivals would not be tolerated.

Asserting that provocative action from any community members will be considered as a serious offence, Annamalai said that illegal cattle transport in the district should be stopped.

The action against the lawbreakers will be ruthless and merciless. He added that the policemen who were appointed for vigilance at the checkposts had been given arms to be used in retaliation against offenders who fired at them, he added.

The Superintendent of Police also urged people not to believe rumours transmitted through social media. Responding to a request, Annamalai said that police officials would keep a watch on people who try to harass people during festivals by begging.

The fire tenders will be placed on standby during celebrations in the city to avoid major mishaps.

The police officers concerned should to maintain law and order at Adi Udupi, where the Ganeshotsava celebrations are held near a mosque, he said while responding to a request for stopping of devotional songs during the celebrations when 'Namaz' was offered by muslims in the mosque.

He said as many as 406 idols would be installed in the district and 403 will be immersed by September 23. The rest, one each at Padubidri, Kundapur and Udupi will be immersed later, he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
