Mandya, May 5: Muthathi, which is the most sought after picnic spot in Malavalli taluk, Mandya district, especially for youngsters, has turned into a jinxed place, with more than 98 deaths reported in the last five years.
But, they seem to be unaware of the whirlpools and strong current, which claim lives of people who venture deep into the waters. The river is wide and deep at Muthathi, but appears very safe. In their enthusiasm to enjoy, they get into the water, throwing away the norms and thus meet their watery grave.
It is also claimed that crocodiles are spotted at Muthathi and there are boards warning them not to get into the waters. But, youngsters, in their enthusiasm to play, get carried away, inviting death.
According to available statistics, 98 people have lost their lives by drowning between 2010 and 2016.
In the last four months alone, eight people have drowned. Most of the deceased are tourists, and are from Mysuru and Bengaluru. It is also alleged that most of the deceased had entered the waters in an inebriated condition.
About 25 warning boards have been installed at vantage points on the route to Muthathi, with the help of Gram Panchayats, cautioning the public not to get into the river.
PSI Govindaraju said, a large number of tourists visit the place on Saturdays and Sundays. The Forest department deputes eight guards for safety purpose during weekends. Moreover, consumption of liquor is banned in the area.
A proposal has been submitted, seeking Rs 12 lakh to erect barricades, Govindaraju added.
Harish, Assistant Director, Department of Tourism, said, liquor was banned, and plans were afoot to erect barricades. The Forest department too has set up checkposts on the route to prevent such incidents, he added.
