Bantwal, May 29: The team of police officials investigating the murder case of Bajrang Dal activist Rajesh Poojary, who was killed on March 21 in Bantwal taluk, have been accused of picking up innocent Muslim youth residing in Mallur village in the same taluk and arresting them on false charges.

The families of the three youth have alleged foul play by the police due to the pressure yielded by members of the Sangh Parivar. They have accused the police of barging into houses and arresting innocent youth from poor families who earned their livelihood doing small jobs without any basis or factual evidence.

The three who are accused of murdering the Bajrang Dal activist-Hussain, 20, Irshad, 21, and Imran, 20-had no links with any group, faction or organization, and neither were they part of any political party.

The bread-winners of the families, the three youth are now languishing in jail without being granted bail. The families have also alleged that the youth were beaten up and tortured by the police into wrongly confessing the crime.

Financial problems have also disheartened the parents of these youth from approaching the high court for bail. All in all, the families of the youth find that the recklessness of the police officials in-charge Rajashekhar Maistry and Lingappa Poojary has ruined the lives of the youth.

Hussain is the second son of Jaafar-Khatoon couple living in a small tiled-roof house in Demmale in Mallur. Since both parents are physically unwell, Hussain was the sole bread-winner of the family ever since the eldest son had left home few years ago. He earned his livelihood by doing off jobs such as selling pickles and sharpening knives.

Even after the murder that took place on March 21, he was in the village, going about his work and playing cricket as usual, unlike someone who had committed a crime. Without any proof, the police entered the house and arrested him on March 30.

He is said to have been picked up by the police and tortured for several hours in police custody. However, Hussain 's mother Khatoon tells that he was not even familiar with the person who was killed.

Irshad, son of Hasainar and Nafeesa, was also a bread-winner for the family. He was arrested by the police a day later while he was returning home after playing cricket, which was his pastime.

Son of Hasainar and Shahida couple, Imran also worked as a lorry driver for a living. He was arrested while he was travelling in a bus.

When the parents of the youth arrived at the police station in the night, they found only Haneef, who worked as a coolie and Irfan, who was a high school student, there. Irfan 's hand was badly injured by beatings.

The families say that the police had bowed to the pressure of saffron organizations who had given the police an ultimatum till March 31 to arrest the culprits in the murder case. Fearing a severe backlash, the police have fixed ' the three innocent youth, they claim.

Family members of the arrested youth had also participated in the protest rally led by DYFI district president Muneer Katipalla on May 27. He informed that the organization along with family members will hold a 24-hour hunger strike demanding a fair reinvestigation into the murder case in front of the deputy commissioner 's office in Mangalore on June 4.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
