Police constable booked for dowry harassment, murder attempt

Mangaluru, Feb 25: A complaint has been registered at Puttur police station against a police constable on charges of dowry harassment, assault and attempt to murder on his wife. The woman who was assaulted is receiving treatment at a government hospital.

In the complaint lodged by Saramma from Melantabettu in Belthangady taluk, she has alleged that after her daughter Mumtaz (29) was married in 2009 to Muhammed Rafeeq from Haleneranki in Puttur taluk, she was continuously harassed for dowry by her husband and family members Adam Maistry, Aminamma and Ashraf.

She has stated in her complaint that Mumtaz had given 100 sovereign gold along with Rs 3 lakh in cash to her in-laws at the time of marriage and alleged that all the accused had tortured Mumtaz, who was pregnant, on February 19 demanding more dowry. Thereafter, an unconscious Mumtaz was taken to a hospital in Puttur.

Later, Mumtaz's family brought her for treatment to Belthangady and later shifted her to Wenlock Government Hospital as she was pregnant.

In the complaint, it is stated that Muhammed Rafeeq was employed as a constable in the police force in the district and had been harassing his wife even before the recent assault. Although initially, would listen to the elders and make amends, he had begun harassing her again in the recent few months, said the complaint.

A complaint was also given to Belthangady women's helpline in this regard.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
