Prevent misuse of Wakf assets: Shakunthala Shetty

Puttur, Feb 25: It is the duty of the respective mohallas to see to it that the Wakf property belonging to the Wakf Board is not misused, said Puttur MLA Shakunthala Shetty.

Speaking at the information camp organised by Dakshina Kannada Wakf advisory committee on facilities provided by Wakf Board at Town Hall in Puttur, she said that the the state government has given grants through the Wakf department for the improvement of worship centres. Already facilities and grants have been distributed to a few masjids in the taluk through the Wakf Board.

She said that priority was given to providing grants to masjids through the Wakf Board. Already, two masjids in Puttur taluk were given a grant of Rs 1 lakh, while another masjid was given a grant of Rs 50,000 for the construction of toilets.

Proposals have been sent to the government on the basis of priority. Through the grants provided by the government through the Wakf Board, each resident of the respective mohalla around the masjid should come forward to improve the mohallas, she said.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, state Wakf Board member Y Mohammed Kunhi said that it was important for every masjid to be registered under the state Wakf Board. It is not right to start a fight or indulge in groupism in masjid and its committee for minor reasons. Efforts should be made to remain united by resolving the problems within the committee, he said.

District Wakf advisory committee president S M Rasheed Haji presided over the programme. Puttur Tahsildar M T Kullegowda and Sullia Tahsildar Shrinivas Shetty gave information to committee heads of masjids in Puttur and Sullia taluks.

Puttur taluk Muslim Samyukta Jamaat president Haji Ibrahim Kammadi, Usman Mithur, Kanachur Monu, Mohammed Farooq, Musthafa, Hussain, Mohammed Sharief and others were present.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
