Mangalore, Jul 23: Buildings which are in the construction phase may have their licenses cancelled if they fail to take measures to check the breeding of mosquitoes at the construction sites, said Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabala Marla.

Speaking at a meeting convened to discuss measures to check malaria in the MCC limits, he said that a committee would be formed to form a malaria prevention action plan and oversee its implementation in its jurisdiction.

The committee to finalise the action plan has been formed with the inclusion of the Mayor, deputy mayor, chief whip, opposition leader in the city council, president of the standing committee, health officers, four corporators and four physicians.

Mr Marla said that the MCC would use mosquito larvicidal oil to control malaria in the city limits, akin to Mumbai and Chennai city corporations.

Physician and member of the malaria prevention committee Dr Srinivas Kakkilaya said that medical colleges should be given the responsibility of conducting anti-malaria drives especially at construction sites instead of handing them to an outside agency.

The control unit of vector-borne diseases should be headed by a senior retired medical officer and the MCC should take also measures to check the breeding of mosquitoes at bus stands and railway stations, he said.

He said that the students and volunteers from medical colleges should visit construction sites and collect the blood samples of construction workers to test for malaria. A campaign should be started to create awareness among general public to take measures to check malaria in the city.

A social worker present in the meeting said that health inspectors should also be entrusted with controlling malaria.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
