Mangalore, Apr 12: Reproaching Congress LS candidate B Janardhan Poojary for making repeated attempts at maligning the character of prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, BJP state vice-president Sulochana Bhat said that such statements did not befit a senior Congressman.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, she accused Mr Poojary of indulging in vote-bank politics by promising reservation to the Brahmins and GSB communities. He could have brought in reservation for the Brahmins and GSBs much earlier during his term as a union minister. Why is he indulging in vote-bank politics this time, she demanded, adding that he was losing his status and honour by making statements against Modi.

She said that the national manifesto released by BJP stresses on programmes for reservation and education of women to empower them. During the UPA rule, several cases of assault on women in the district have created an environment where there is no protection and safety for them. The UPA government also introduced Nirbhaya project ' initiative in the wake of crimes against women, allotting a sum of Rs 1,000 crore, but the project was never implemented. This shows the competency of the UPA government, she pointed.

Stating that no other government had introduced the most pro-women programmes in the state other than BJP government led by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, she said that all units of BJP Mahila Morcha and its members were engaged in campaigning for the party before the elections.

She said that the Congress was blind to the woes faced by women working in households in the state due to hike in prices and cap on subsidised gas cylinders, while their leaders were eager to point fingers at Modi for having separated from his wife for the sake of the country.

Details of Poojary's spouse left blank in affidavit

During the press conference, she also pointed out that the name of the spouse was left blank in the affidavit declaring his assets and liabilities submitted by Mr Poojary while filing his nomination papers as the Lok Sabha elections.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
