Bantwal, Mar 26: Residents of Pattugudde in Sajipamooda village of Bantwal taluk staged a demonstration on Wednesday against creating a Hindu cremation ground in the residential area in violation of the Panchayat Raj Act. The protesters demanded that the cemetery should be shifted to a non-residential area.

Led by the local Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, the demonstration was held in front of taluk panchayat office at B C Road on Wednesday.

Addressing the demonstrators, Samiti president Ganapathi Bhat said that few politically-motivated persons were trying to set up a Hindu cemetery on a land of 45 cents in a residential area. It is illegal and condemnable that the assistant sub-divisional officer is trying to establish a cemetery in a residential area violating basic regulations. Out of the total 30 residences in the area, around seven houses, a well and a water tank are in the vicinity of the proposed cemetery, he said.

The protestors said that around 1,700 families belonging to Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities were living in the area in harmony, warning of possibility of communal clashes if the cemetery was established in a residential area.

Leaders such as Roshan Cutinho, B S Abbas, Frederick, Hameed, Narayana and several others participated in the protest.
