Mangaluru, Jan 16: The Pulse Polio immunization programme will be launched state-wide in Karnataka on Sunday, with the state health department making arrangements to set up as many as 32,628 booths across the state to serve the purpose.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said that the two rounds of the pulse polio programme for 2014-15 would be held in Karnataka on January 18 and February 22, aiming to cover all children below 5 years of age throughout the country as part of the national programme to eradicate polio. The programme will be given a state-wide launch in Karnataka on Sunday in Bengaluru by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, he informed.
Director of Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services Dr H C Ramesh said that around 75 lakh children altogether below 5 years of age would be covered under the immunization programme in the state this year. As many as 1,03,440 health workers in 51,558 teams will help in administering polio drops to children. A total of 2,162 transit teams and 923 mobile teams will be set up throughout the state, he informed, adding that the health department was taking care to ensure every child in the state was fully immunized.
In Dakshina Kannada district, a total of 921 booths will be set up to administer polio drops to children below five years of age. There will be 26 transit teams, 10 mobile teams and 3,808 volunteers in the district to administer polio drops, said Mr Khader.
The district administration aims at covering a total of 1,68,480 children under the pulse polio programme in Dakshina Kannada on Sunday.
Polio drops will be administered to eligible children from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 18 and February 22 in the booths set up across the state.
